In a significant shake-up at OpenAI, Sam Altman has stepped down as CEO, with Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati appointed as the interim Chief Executive Officer. The board’s decision to replace Altman was influenced by concerns over his communication style, which they felt impacted their ability to oversee the company effectively.
Mira Murati, an experienced engineer with a background in aerospace, automotive, VR, and AR, joined OpenAI in 2018. She has been instrumental in the development of key projects like ChatGPT and DALL-E and brings a wealth of experience to her new role, including a stint at Tesla and involvement in VR company Leap Motion.
Her appointment comes at a critical time for OpenAI, as the company navigates the rapidly evolving landscape of AI development and regulation. Murati’s experience in AI governance and policy is seen as a crucial asset for OpenAI moving forward.
The leadership change has also revealed underlying tensions within OpenAI’s board. Shortly after Altman’s departure, co-founder Greg Brockman also resigned, with co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever announcing the changes.
